What do most people think about when then think about hash? A can. A can of corned beef hash. But hash is so much more than that. It comes in different styles and names from all over the world. Pitt y pana in Sweden, biksemad in Denmark, Gröstel in Austria, picadillo in Mexico, stovies in Scotland and hachis in France, to name a few. So, get ready to re-acquaint yourself with an amazingly diverse and versatile dish and Think Outside the Can!
Chorizo Hash at Blue Pig Cafe
Hash Chapstick®. Say what? Is this a Napoleon Dynamite hashcapade? No, it’s the caffeine-fueled musings of my posse during a recent hash extravaganza at Blue Pig Cafe. You see, we were continuing our brainstorming session for new ways to re-purpose potato hash. Unfortunately, we crossed over into a surreal culinary experiment gone wrong. Fortunately, it was just a thought experiment – no harm, no foul! But I digress.
Beef Tenderloin Hash Pot Pie
I love pot pies! My Mom would bake up a batch and surprise us after a long day of sledding in the frigid Wyoming winters of yore. And so it was during my last hashcapade at Cafe Nell that the idea for this post was born. I was discussing what to do with leftover potato hash with my newest hashcapade tweep, Mark. A quick study, he asked, “What about a pie, a potato hash pot pie?” “Eureka!” I shouted, terrifying the other patrons as I rubbed my hands together like a deranged scientist. “Mark, that’s brilliant! That will be my next post!” And so it is…
Sausage Hash at Toast
I have often been accused of chasing shiny objects, but no one can fault my hashcapade obsession. One simple tweet is all it took for me to juggle my schedule and high-tail it to Toast: Can you blame me?
Trout Hash at Cafe Nell in Portland

Smoked Salmon Hash at Goldy’s
You know you’ve found a winning breakfast spot for a hashcapade when the waiting list continues throughout the day! Goldy’s Breakfast Bistro in Boise, Idaho has been packing them in for over a decade. And on this crisp, wintry morning, three different hashes were calling my name – Smoked Salmon Hash, Red Flannel Hash and Corned Beef Hash. Decisions, decisions!

She bravely joined our recent food coma-inducing hashcapade at Besaw’s. An avid skier and artist, she set her sights on a delicious culinary adventure of the hash kind. Enjoy! >>>
Smoked Salmon Hash Panini
Whoa! I mean, WHOA! Who knew smoked salmon hash and panini were soul mates, like yin and yang or peanut butter and chocolate? The answer is several innovative food carts and foodies across the US. My @Hashcapades twitter feed is an endless source of ideas and entertainment. It was there I discovered versions of smoked salmon hash in sandwiches. I thought, “Well, how about in a panini?” And the rest, as they say, is history!
Pretty Veggie (Vegetarian) Hash
I see lots of hash photos on my @Hashcapades twitter feed that make me drool…literally! So while I was minding my own business, well, actually nosing around, my expert eye was captivated by a simple veggie hashcapade. To be more specific, a Pretty Veggie Hash from my newest tweep and “East Coast gir,l” Mindy Berger, .a.k.a. @Pretty_Veggie. She has a fabulous blog called Pretty Veggie that you simply must check out for great vegetarian dishes! And without further ado, I’m excited to introduce Mindy and the very first hashcapade recipe guest post! >>>
Long ago and far away in a land called New York, where I grew up, I remember my father eating corned beef hash that came from a can. He, or rather my mother, fried it in a pan and put fried eggs on top, and my father loved it. I could never understand how he could eat that “stuff,” especially since it smelled so awful!
