How loud can your hashcapade go? Ours went to 11 as raucous, bawdy fits of laughter erupted over drinks and brunch at Equinox. Whether channeling This is Spinal Tap or conjugating the past pluperfect of “tweet”, we let it all hang out on Missississippi & Shaver in NoPo. Continue if you dare…
For the uninitiated, Equinox is a lovely restaurant tucked away just off North Mississippi, one of my very favorite neighborhoods in Portland. Equinox has a spacious outdoor patio, which is perfect for the warmer months. Our crew opted for the warm and inviting space inside on a chilly October morning.
As soon as we entered, we were seated and our waiter, Sean, got the party started right away. Coffee? Yes, please. Bloody Mary? Yes, please. Serrano-infused vodka? Yes, please! Surely you can see where this is going…loose lips and all.
Our drinks arrived (in 3D ) and our new guests who hadn’t joined before, quickly warmed up to the conversation of dating, relationships, sushi and, um, love pumps! We provided advice on the sequence of escalating interest, you see, starting with coffee, then coffee with liquor, then stiff drinks. I suggested that allusions to favorite movie lines from This is Spinal Tap might help signal intense interest – nudge, nudge, wink wink.
Well, our conversation spiraled out of control and the next thing you know, we were conjugating “to tweet” and invented (drum roll please) the hashtag, #Idonedidtwatthat. If you are reading this and your favorite liquid beverage is spurting out your nose, we salute you!
And now, back to the main event: Smoked Salmon Hash. First of all, Equinox smokes their own salmon, and corned beef, plus, they cure their own bacon. Props for that! Second, the salmon hash is drizzled with a lovely, coma-inducing dijon hollandaise that provides rich flavor and, well, sauciness. Finally, shredded potatoes, spinach, caramelized onion, and red pepper round up this perfectly portioned hash. Well done!
What else did we enjoy? Clockwise from upper left – Corned Beef Hash (in-house corned beef), Chilaquiles, Pillow (puff pastry stuffed with roasted red pepper, mushrooms & caramelized onion) and more Smoked Salmon Hash!
Thanks to David, Ryan, Nate, Josh, Julie, Kristin, Cristina and Maria for a fabulous, entertaining hashcapade…one of the funniest (and naughtiest) hashcapades I can remember. Special thanks to Sean whose excellent recommendations and service made Equinox rocket up my list of great restaurants for brunch in Portland.
Happy Hashcapades,
Clark
I had smoked hash when I was visiting Amsterdam, but unfortunately there was no salmon involved.
